If you type "things to do in Bledsoe County" into a search bar, the first ten results all point you the same direction: drive seventeen miles west, park at Fall Creek Falls, look at the waterfall, drive home. That is a fine afternoon. It is not how anyone who lives here spends a summer.
The resident calendar sits closer to home. It runs on a courthouse-block rhythm in downtown Pikeville, punctuated by three bluegrass weekends at a rural fire hall and one week in August when the fairgrounds absorb everyone's evenings. The state park is a side trip inside that structure, not the frame it hangs on. Once you see the shape, the summer plans itself.
The Market Adds A Second Day In June
The Pikeville Farmers Market sits at 3150 Main Street, directly beside the Bledsoe County courthouse, in a covered pavilion. Saturday mornings from 8:00 to 12:00 are the anchor, and the season runs from April into late fall. That much is unchanged.
What is worth knowing this year is the second day. The market's own scheduling notes that it opens every Saturday in May and then adds Tuesdays beginning in June. For anyone who works a Saturday shift or wants to shop the pavilion before the heat comes up, that Tuesday morning slot is the practical difference between catching the market and missing it for a month. Vendors bring produce, farm-raised eggs, honey, beef, baked goods, canned goods, cut flowers, and woodwork, and the setup includes face painting and live music while you shop.
If you want to shop closer to the source instead, Gary Swafford Farms on Summer City Road keeps a covered stand open daily from 8:30 a.m. into the evening through November, running its own selection of cucumbers, melons, onions, peaches, peppers, squash, and pumpkins as the season turns.
Nine Mile Bluegrass Runs Three Weekends, Not One
Most people who have lived here for a while know Nine Mile. What outsiders usually miss is that it isn't a single festival. It is a three-part series across the summer, all benefiting the Nine Mile Volunteer Fire Company at 21008 Old State Highway 28, with the Edmons Music Barn on Edmons Memorial Road as the paired venue. The tradition is roughly forty years old and the weekend ticket is ten dollars.

The Bledsoe County Fair runs August 1 through August 8, 2026 at the fairgrounds on Allen P. Deakins Road. The theme this year is Liberty, Land, and Livestock, and the schedule is what you would expect from a working agricultural county: livestock shows, exhibits, rides, concessions, and community showcases stretched across eight days.
A few dates on the ancillary calendar matter if you have kids or a competitive streak. The 2026 Fairest of the Fair pageant is scheduled for July 18. Inside exhibit entries are received August 2. The Race TN Series opens fair week on August 1 at 5:00 p.m. On the music side, Eli Tabor & The Kinship Band takes the stage August 6 at 5:00 p.m.
The overlap worth planning around is the collision between the last night of the fair, Saturday August 8, and the middle weekend of Nine Mile. If you want to do both, the fair closes out in Pikeville while Nine Mile runs an all-day Saturday schedule starting at 11:00 a.m. thirty minutes north. That is a two-venue day if you want it to be.
Fall Creek Falls Is A Side Trip, With Caveats
The park sits about seventeen miles from Pikeville and covers roughly 29,800 acres on the Cumberland Plateau. Fall Creek Falls itself drops 256 feet and is one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern United States. Those facts are on every travel page in the region. Here is what a resident planning an actual afternoon needs to know in 2026.
The Betty Dunn Nature Center has been remodeled with new roofing, insulation, and windows, along with accessibility upgrades. EV charging stations are now installed at the Lodge and at the Nature Center, which is a small but real change if you have been avoiding the drive in an electric vehicle.
The trail situation is less tidy. The Cable Trail is closed due to storm damage; the park has asked visitors not to attempt to cross the Cane Creek Gorge until it reopens. The Piney Falls Trail between the Fall Creek Falls parking lot and the Piney Falls parking lot remains closed from the 2023 tornado impact, and Millikan's Overlook Trail is closed even though the overlook itself is open. If your standard summer routine included any of those three, replan around the main loop and the base-of-falls descent.
One longer-term note: an 838-acre addition to the park was arranged through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation with TennGreen Land Conservancy, The Nature Conservancy in Tennessee, The Conservation Fund, and the Open Space Institute. The land shares nearly a mile of border with the existing park and includes steep bluffs, rock houses, and caves. It does not change your Saturday plan today, but it is the reason the western edge of the park will keep expanding for a while.

- The apple barn at 6351 New Harmony Road pairs a farm market and bakery with a small restaurant and gift shop, useful when the Saturday market has closed for the week and you still want to bring something home.
